Community Profile


8,000 years ago in Georgia and 6100 years ago in Armenia, wine was formulated from fermented fruit juice, usually grapes. What is good about grapes is that its natural chemical balance allows it to ferment without adding sugar, acids, enzymes and other nutrients. (wikipedia.org) Wine is an important beverage used for flavoring and ingredient in various cuisines. It also plays vital roles in various religious ceremonies. Furthermore, studies conducted in France reveal that moderate consumption of alcohol and wine helps patients with heart related diseases while excessive drinking of wine and alcoholic drinks pose negative effects. Despite conflicting positive and negative effects of alcohol, it has become an integral part of any culture. It can never be omitted in man’s existence.


There are different kinds of wine and alcoholic beverages. Some are bubbly like beers, others contribute to better blood circulation like red wine, while some are crystal clear like white wines and some are strong as like whisky. “Bareks” or “barekolkol”, a local wine made out of Sasa (Nipa fruit) that abounds in Vinzons. It goes through the process of fermentation, a local produce that is affordable to the masa. It is definitely one of the best tasting local wines in the Island because they mix this any other product like tang juice, and any other kind of juice etc. while there are other wines that come from coconuts.

We discovered that many families earn their living through lambanog making and usually, many young people help their parents. In any other municipality, like in Quezon that they success in making lambanog or barikolkol and producing this product. In doing this product like in Vinzons the main ingredients is could Sasa that produced tuba etc. While in Quezon that made from the nectar of flowers of coconut trees, this is then distilled and made into lambanog. But this is not how easy the process is because getting all the flowers from coconut trees could be a really difficult task. Men of the locality will climb up these trees and would cross from one tree to another using a long bamboo tree that is connected to the tress.
